Book Reviews

Percy Jackson and the Olympians series recommended by Angelina R.

Many individuals assume gods to be all powerful, flawless beings of divine class. While this may be true to the eyes of many, Percy Jackson & The Olympians takes the morality of gods to a completely new level. This book series in particular has a unique take on Greek gods, specifically in the western region.  We’ve all heard of a god having children to take care of, but these stories often pertain to the idea of one god in a relationship with another. However, what would it be like if one fell in love with a human? Because of this, the characters themselves are very diverse mentally, morally, and physically. Powerful beings, known as Demigods, can still be flawed and scarred. For example, Percy Jackson, a dyslexic child with ADHD, goes on adventures far beyond what could be assumed about him in a classroom. Children born from war and intelligence can be weak, or can have varied difficulties mentally. This gives a unique twist to how these Demigods will react and grow. Not only that, but the series is full of dark and witty humor, topped off with plenty of fighting and struggling. Nonetheless, this series at hand is wonderful for everybody at varying reading levels. While it does include complicated Greek names and mythology, the concepts within the book itself are easy to grasp and understand. The language is simple, but the power behind these novels speaks far beyond what’s on paper.

Maximum Ride recommended by Leeya I.

“Your life could depend on it. I’m risking everything to tell you right now, but you need to know.” Max, the main character in Maximum Ride, tries to warn the reader. Right from the beginning, this book was exciting.
Max, a 16 year old girl, has no real siblings. She considers Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gasman, and Angel her siblings. Max is a nice girl who protects her friends. Max and all of her friends have to fight erasers almost every day.
Erasers kidnapped Angel and it's up to Max to save her. Max needed help, she needed her friends, but where were they? Had the Erasers gotten to them?
This book inspired me to talk with my friends more. The theme of the book was all about friendship. It showed friends should always be there for each other.
I am so glad my brother told me about this book. I loved it and I want to read the rest of the series. It makes me want to be there more for my friends. There were many exciting and tense parts of the book - it made me want to keep reading more. So I would recommend this book to everyone!

Maniac Magee recommended by Kadence M.

The book Maniac Magee takes place in mostly two different places: west end (white side of town) and east end (black side of town). Maniac is a runaway who tries to figure out where he belongs. He runs from place to place on many crazy adventures.
Maniac makes some enemies throughout his adventures. He also makes some
unlikely friends. He teaches people how to be a good person but along the way he is teaching himself to how to be the best person he could be. He is just trying to figure out where he belongs but it is not easy and Maniac knows that more than anyone.
Maniac Magee is mostly about Maniac who now is a legend going through some crazy and odd adventures. Maniac is just trying to be himself and some people are giving him a hard time.
I think the book has a very strong message: do not judge a book by its cover. Everyone makes fun of Maniac because he did not have much but now he is a legend because he could survive and thrive with not much. I would definitely recommend this book because Maniac is the best legend ever. Maniac Magee is the best book I have ever read; it is very funny, sad, and adventurous.

Survivors: The Empty City  recommended by Nolan B.

The book Survivors: The Empty City takes place in a deserted town. There are two dogs that are trying to find a new home after they escaped the trap house.  They split up after they run out of food so they both begin a new adventure for both dogs.  One of them doesn’t make it; the other finds a new home.
The main characters are Sweet and Lucky.  They both escaped the trap house and try to find a new home.  On the way, they had a little problem with Longpaw, the antagonist of the story.  They fight over food they have found.
In the plot, Lucky makes the internal decision to temporarily join this “leashed pack” to help his sister and her friends in their new world and help them find their dog spirits.  He thinks this will help stop the dreams.  Overnight, a house collapses nearby that houses the bulldog Alfie.  Only Lucky and Bruno have the courage to go and save Alfie, and he joins the new pack.  The other members become determined to help others more.  Afterwards, Daisy falls unconscious when she goes back for something in her house and falls victim to a gas leak.  Lucky uses this to show the pack cannot hold on to the hope of their humans.  He lets them take one item each that will remind them of their owners into the wilderness.
The theme of the story is don’t trust strangers and/or don’t wander off from home.  This is the theme because if you trust strangers then you won’t leave home and get lost.
I recommend this book to whomever likes adventures stories and survival stories.  It was a really interesting book and I hope you enjoy it.

My Life as a Gamer recommended by Joey D.
In the book My Life as a Gamer, Jake Tashjian writes a story that is filled with adventure and mystery. In this book the author always creates a mystery no matter where you stop, even in the middle of a page. This book will always keep you or the reader on the edge their seats. This a great book and series.
In this book, the main character is a boy named Derk. He likes to play video games and gets offered to play a game that is not available to other players. So he knows that he is not allowed to tell anyone anything but things do not always happen as he said he would. In this story, Derk has to keep up with school as well. Derkś dad is a professional artist and so Derk decides to take advantage of this to help him with his final assessment in 6th grade math test. This test will make him either pass of fail.
Derk was having a competition with 7 other people and they had a contest every day. This competition was who could get the highest score.
In this book, the theme was that you should always believe in yourself that you can do it. The reason for this is that is talks about whether or not Derk is going to pass the test.
I recommend this book because this author always uses an awesome ending that makes you want to read the next book. I like it because it always leaves you at the end of your seat. This is a fun and exciting book. Just remember, do not take the book too seriously!

Max the Mighty recommended by Maggie B.

“Bookworm, bookworm, ugly little bookworm.” Max could have ignored it but he didn't and look where he is now. Losing his best friend makes him want a new one.  I know I would feel the same way. Max the Mighty is based in a poorer part of the city. People there aren't the friendliest.
Max is a boy in 8th grade who just recently lost his best friend whose body did not grow as fast as his heart then his body shut down. In this book, Max meets a new friend a little younger than him. Her name is Rachel. She is 11 years old and is in 6th grade at Max's school.
They go on many journeys just like Max and Freak. But the undertaker aka her stepfather made up rumors about Max saying that he stole Bookworm (which is what they call Rachel if you couldn't tell she got that name from all the books she reads). As Max and Rachel go on their craziest adventure yet, they realize they are being followed by the undertaker.
Bookworm’s mom married the undertaker who was not kind to Rachel and her mom.  Rachel’s mom tells Max to take Rachel some place safe.
I recommend this book no matter what genre you like; it is one of my favorite books. It is a book where you can laugh, cry, and so much more.  If you want to find out what happens next, read this book!

Tunnels recommended by James P.

The book Tunnels is an action packed book that is very unpredictable. But this book is kind of hard to read. I would only read this book if you are an advanced reader, also you need to be patient because it leaves you at so… many... cliff hangers. There are multiple books in this series that all have completely different topics.
Tunnels is about a dad and a son digging a mine in a side of a mountain to find more money because they didn't have much money because of a family accident. But they didn’t know that someone was watching them. Although they felt like someone was. But they thought, Why would someone be stalking a dad and his son so they ignored it. BUT THEN
This book can be kind of frustrating at times because of all of the cliff hangers and change of plot but the author does it in a good way that will make most people like it. If you liked this book than i would read other books by this author.
The main character is Will Burrows and he is 16. Will is a very interesting guy. He s not afraid of anything . Will is a very nice guy but when the family accident happened it ruined his life. It was devastating for him, It changed his life. He was no longer nice no longer polite. He was a big mean guy that no one liked.
I would recommend this book if you are some what an advanced reader and very patient. Also if you like action and mystery books. This book got my attention because of its cover and its hook; they are very eye catching and make you think, "Huh, that book looks very interesting."

Sisters recommended by Christina A.

It takes place in a suburb and in the normal time.  There were two girls that fought with each other. The two sisters fought with each other and mom  yelled at them.  They kept on fighting.  Raina is the oldest, Amara youngest of all. These are the main characters in the story .
This book taught me that there are big consequences in life, and some are hard to deal with. Still you gotta do it.  Life should have consequences.
I like this book because it taught me something new. Also it's very hysterical to read. I laughed and laughed all day.

The Strange Case of Origami Yoda recommended by Josh G.

The protagonist is Kellen. He likes hanging out with his friends, and doing stuff with his best friend Tommy. They met in first grade.  They sit at one table; they are very loud.  But he was not very good at sports like baseball.  He kept on getting strikeout after strikeout.

On occasion, he hits it straight to the jerk pitcher. And he would throw it to first base for an easy out.  I may as well just cry because everyone knows that I do it.  But they do not know that there is a difference between the tears.  I think there is a difference but they do not think so.  I am thinking that if I get a homerun then I would be a hero.

The conflict of the story is that he cannot hit a homerun.  And now he is known as the kid who cries during gym class.  Every time he steps up to the plate he said that I will hit it down the throat to himself.  He misses the first then the second then the kids wait.  Because he always strikes out and so he swings then he misses a third time.  And everybody laughs and then he goes and cries on the bench like he does all the time.

Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events recommended by Jasmine R.

I recommend this series because it's not your normal story where everything goes right. The Series of Unfortunate Events is. as the name states. not a happy story.  These books have twists, turns, surprises, and more. I have read all the books wishing they would never end. They are all real page turners, and you wish you could never stop reading. It's like each sentence is a cliffhanger!

Michael Vey series recommended by Alex S.

My favorite book is Michael Vey because it has a lot of suspense. This book is about a boy named Michael Vey who has a superpower. Little does he know, he is not the only one with superpowers. One day an evil doctor named Dr.Hatch is the supposed creator of the children with different powers. Michael is only wanting to get answers. This book is also full of mystery and plot twists when you least expect them. No more detail can be given without spoiling the book, so go and read it for yourself to learn what happens next. Overall, I would highly recommend this book.

+Anime recommended by Brianna M.

You should read +Anime in your school library. By the title, you can be easily fooled that this book is about Anime. Although the book is in manga format, this book has more to its name than its title. This adventure follows a boy name Cooro that has the wings of a crow. He and his companions, Husky, Nana, and Senri, are all what are classified as +Anime. +Anime are humans that are given animal properties by a near-death experience. With their quest to belong in the world in their grasp, they find out that one of them is working for the enemy. To discover the ending and to have fun adventures flying in the sky or splashing through the sea, read +Anime!

“If only I could fly like a bird, or swim through the water like a fish. Why do humans wish for such things?” ~ +Anime Book 1

So B. It recommended by Rebecka N.

I recommend So B. It  because it is very deep and tells a lot of life changing moments for the main character Heidi. Heidi has a lot of problems going on in her life and she tries to fix them.  She is a very deep person who states her emotions in a very clear way. This book has you stop and think about life. Heidi doesn't have the best life, but she appreciates what she has.
